If your preference is a stream or lake, Capitol Reef Country has something to offer every discriminating angler. With countless high mountain lakes or streams and valley rivers to choose from, you could find yourself with more options than there is time to fish.
The southern Utah region near Capitol Reef National Park and specifically the Boulder Mountains, Fishlake Mountain, Thousand Lakes Mountain and the Fremont River are becoming more sought after fisheries to fly fishing and those looking to get away from the crowds. These waters boast 4 species of trout and trout hybrids including; Brown, Rainbow, Lake Trout and Cutthroat as well as Tiger (Brown/Brook) and Splake (Brook/Lake Trout). Several sub-species of Cutthroat can be found including the Yellowstone, Colorado River and most importantly the native Bonneville Cutthroat. And anglers will find countless quality high-mountain lakes loaded with football sized brookies.
As many of these fisheries are found in obscure off-the-beaten-path locations, it is recommended that anglers new to the area consider hiring a local guide who can increase chances of success. Though these streams and lakes are as good as or better than any in the country, locations are not obvious and take considerable time to learn and master. A fly fishing guide in the Capitol Reef National Park area is money well spent. The prime season starts in early May and continues until late October.
